Birding Christmas Cards

Birding Christmas Cards - Greeting and Note Cards

I'm happy to present my initial line of Birding Christmas Cards. Actually, since they're non-denominational, I should probably call them Holiday Birding Greeting Cards. Oh, except there's more than just birds, there are also winter scenes, mostly from the American Southwest desert. So maybe I should call them Winter Solstice Cards for birders and those who love the Southwest.

These Birding Christmas cards are blank inside, but I can add your custom greeting for an additional fee. Contact me to discuss your custom greeting, or if you would like a card custom designed for you. Another available option is for me to hand-sign the image on each card. Birding Christmas cards are available individually or in packs of six. They come with envelopes.

Gila Woodpecker on Saguaro

A Gila Woodpecker looks for things to eat in the early morning. Gila Woodpeckers nest in cavities they carve out in the saguaro, but they prefer the cavity to have hardened walls so they won't nest in a fresh hole. But many other birds will take advantage of the nesting cavities, including House Sparrows, Cactus Wrens, and Starlings.

Hermit Thrush In Berry Bush

In a secluded thicket near Page Springs in the Verde Valley, I first spotted this Hermit Thrush plucking berries from a bush that was covered in fruit. I also found a Spotted Towhee eating from the same bush, and a small group of Javelina came through the area while I was there. This image is a multiple award winner - it won a First Place in the Arizona Game and Fish Department (AZGFD) 2008 Arizona Wildlife Calendar Contest and appears on the calendar page for the month of November. It also won a Second Place in the 2008 Indian Wells Arts Festival.

Northern Cardinal Male

At the Page Springs fish hatchery, which is in the Lower Oak Creek Canyon Important Bird Area (IBA), I found a pair of Northern Cardinals. During the winter, the bare branches of the trees make it easier to find and photograph these shy birds. (Surprisingly, a bright red bird is difficult to find in a tree full of green leaves).

Vermilion Flycatcher

Someone at the Wings Over Wilcox bird festival told me I could find Vermilion Flycatchers at Whitewater Draw, which was all I needed to check it out. I hoped I might see some, and maybe get a photo or two. But things were really going my way and found this one that let me get within 20 feet or so. Although they generally are moving about fairly quickly, they do sit in one spot long enough to get shots like this. This photo won First Place in the nongame category of the Arizona Game and Fish (AZGFD) 2007 Calendar Contest, and appeared on the calendar page for the month of April.

San Pedro House is a good place to find many different kinds of birds. Although many of the birds come to the feeders, the Vermilion Flycatcher catches all of its meals in the adjacent field, then comes to perch in the tree next to the house.
