The Verde Valley in central Arizona is surrounded by amazing scenery and lots of photographic opportunities. On the north side of the Verde Valley is Sedona, Oak Creek Canyon, and the Red Rock - Secret Mountain Wilderness. This area is well known for beautiful red rock landscapes, similar to Monument Valley but in a smaller, more accessible area. Many American Western movies, including several John Wayne movies, were filmed here because of the red rock panoramas. It is a favorite for landscape photographers, and many, many photographs of the area have appeared in Arizona Highways magazine.
To the east is the Mogollon Rim with its forests and the towns of Payson and Strawberry. To the West is Mingus Mountain, which separates the valley from Prescott, and next to it is Cleopatra Hill where the mining "ghost town" of Jerome is located.
