The trick to making good images of shorebirds is to get the background to be more interesting than the normal bright, glaring water or the weedy unattractive mudflats. One of the things I teach in my Bird Photography Workshop is how to get better backgrounds for your bird photography. This image of an American Avocet was made very late in the day,while the sun was low and the blue sky was reflected in the water.

Camera model: Canon EOS-1D Mark II
Lens used: Canon 600mm lens at 1200mm (using a 2X teleconverter)
1/800 at f/8.
Av exposure mode (Aperture Priority).
Multi-segment metering +1/3 stop.
