Many people are surprised to discover that there are shorebirds in the desert. They can be found at certain times anywhere there's a decent-sized body of shallow water and/or muddy shores. The trick to making good images of shorebirds is to get the background to be more interesting than the normal bright, glaring water or the weedy unattractive mudflats. This image of Black-Necked Stilts at Cochise Lakes near Wilcox, Arizona was made very late in the day, while the sun was low and the blue sky was reflected in the water.
