The California Condor is an endangered species. When there were only 22 birds left in 1987, the remaining birds were captured in order to build the population in captivity. Beginning in 1991, a few have been reintroduced into the wild each year. There are now over 150 in the wild. In 2007, I watched as seven birds were reintroduced. The release area is in the Vermilion Cliffs area near the border of Arizona and Utah. They can frequently be seen flying along the canyon walls at the Grand Canyon, or perched on the cliffs at Marble Canyon. I've heard that they can also be seen at Big Sur in California.
