A Loggerhead Shrike perches near the water. On a very cold day at Whitewater Draw in Southern Arizona, this Shrike seemed more interested in conserving energy than worrying about the photographer stalking him. I was amazed at how this bird let me get within 10 feet or so, and stayed put for several minutes while I filled up my memory cards with photos. I had to move around a bit too, since there were branches that kept blowing in front of the bird. The background, which was pretty far away, blurred out nicely because of the short depth of field on my 600mm lens with a teleconverter.
