Killdeer chicks in a bird nest on a gravel road on the Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge. These chicks are newly hatched. Not long after, they had already left the nest. Just like their eggs, these chicks are camouflaged to be very hard to find among the gravel they nest in. The parent Killdeer protect their nest by feigning an injured wing. They'll cry loudly as they run away from the nest, dragging one wing as if it were broken. Once the predator starts to chase after them, they'll fly away and when the coast is clear, they'll return to the nest.
