An 'Auku'u (Black-Crowned Night Heron) leans into the wind at the Kealia Pond refuge near the coast in Maui, Hawaii. The very busy Kihei Road in Maui runs along the edge of the ponds in this refuge. I noticed several Black-Necked Stilts and Night Herons close to the road, so after making a harrowing U-turn, I returned and found a patch of shoulder that led to a dirt path I could park on near the water. Unfazed by the traffic or my minivan, I was able to get within a few feet of the Night Herons. Overall, the birds in Maui were relatively approachable, and I had more fun photographing them than going windsurfing or snorkeling, which was my original reason for the trip. This image was a finalist in the National Wildlife Refuge Association's 2005 photo contest.
