An American Bald Eagle preens after eating on a cold winter morning. Klamath Basin National Wildlife Refuge is famous for its Bald Eagles in the winter. Up to 500 may roost there during January and February. They are there to feast on wintering waterfowl in the refuge. They can be seen in the early morning, during the "flyout," when they leave their roosts in the forest to head to the water and fields to hunt. I was fortunate to find this eagle finishing off its breakfast in a tree close to the road.
